La Cocina Oaxaqueña

Just like needing certain people on speed-dial for when you want to vent about other horrendous human beings until you’re hoarse, you need a great taqueria standing by for situations requiring margaritas and carne asada. La Cocina Oaxaqueña is that reliably excellent Mexican restaurant that’s necessary in your life, just like your friend who puts up with too much of your sh*t.

La Cocina Oaxaqueña doesn’t have artisan tile or reclaimed wood flooring or vintage chandeliers, but they do have strong and cheap margaritas served by the pint glass, amazing unlimited salsa, chips fried the second you order them, and face-burning camarones al mojo de ajo (spicy shrimp) - and those are the things that matter. You come here to eat good food with friends, not to take photos of it.

It’s also great for a variety of different situations. The large-ish patio gets plenty of shade and is ideal for a tequila-fueled summer birthday dinner, while the dimly-lit dining room works for a date or small group hang. Just don’t invite any horrendous humans.

Food Rundown

Chips, Guacamole, & Salsa

Indisputable fact: tortilla chips are better when they’re fresh. Here, they’re fried to order. Make sure the guacamole, which has the perfect avocado-lime-cilantro ratio, hits the table, and don’t ignore the unlimited salsa bar.

Chicken Mole Tamale

One of the best tamales in the city. Not ordering one to share is the wrong move.

Tacos Dorados

These fried taquitos are filled with shredded barbacoa and covered with guacamole sauce, black bean sauce, dried chile sauce, Oaxaqueño cheese, and crema. So yeah, they need to be on your table.

Tacos De Pescado

These are some of our favorite tacos in the city. The fish is covered in spices and pan-seared, then topped with a miracle crema that tastes like chipotle and mango and summer breezes.

Cheese Enchiladas

The tortillas in these are fried first, then covered in a delicious, smoky red sauce, which gives the enchiladas more heft. We’ll take seventeen.

Camarones Al Mojo De Ajo

Fair warning: these shrimp are marinated in a lime and garlic sauce that has enough chile to burn your entire face off. They will make you cry and sweat and chug margaritas and spew profanities. But you’ll love every second of it, because ultimately, they are the greatest thing on the menu.

Carne Asada

Flavorful and super thin, this carne asada is excellent inside a tortilla with salsa or with a big bite of La Cocina’s incredibly fluffy rice.
