We know, we know. “Takeout omakase” is an oxymoron - six months ago, it’d have been sacrilegious to even consider. Normally, you’d go out to a restaurant, sit at the counter, and watch as art in the form of fresh fish unfolds before your very eyes. But it’s 2020, baby, and here, there are no rules. So, whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just really, really miss sushi, here are seven spots in San Francisco offering omakase in a box.

Oma San Francisco Station is one of our favorite places to get more affordable omakase in the city. They’ve currently got two to-go options: the mini box ($45), which comes with eight pieces of nigiri, or a bigger one ($60), which comes with 10 nigiri and five pieces of oshizushi - and it’s all excellent. So excellent that you’ll probably eat it all in the passenger seat of your car - not that we’d know from experience... Place your order online at least a day before you want to pick it up.

Wako has some of the best omakase in the city, so we’ll gladly order their takeout version. The nigiri set ($103 per person) comes with assorted appetizers, 12 pieces of nigiri, two maki rolls, and a dessert. The 15-piece sashimi set is $52. Order online for pick-up Tuesday-Saturday, 5:30-7pm.

For omakase that fits under the category of “financially responsible decisions,” order from this Noe Valley sushi bar. Prices range from $24 to $72 - they have nigiri and sashimi sets, a $25 salmon tasting, and an extensive sake selection. Saru is open every day for takeout and delivery within a two-mile radius. You can order online.

Sushi Shio
Bet you never thought you’d be taking an omakase box home and eating it off of a plastic Ikea plate, but, well, here we are. Sushi Shio in the Mission has a $30 omakase, which includes eight pieces of nigiri. For $45 more, they’ll let you add on five higher-quality pieces, like toro or wagyu with black truffle. Place an order here. They’re open every day for pick-up.

Sasa
If your last memorable date night was pre-March 2020, throw a sheet over your coffee table, pull out some candles, and order Sasa’s omakase set for two. It’s $85, and comes with two of everything (12 pieces of nigiri, eight pieces of sashimi, plus two rolls), so you won’t have to share a meal by biting all of your sushi in half. They also have a one-person serving and a mystery chirashi bowl. Text or call 628-600-6945 to order, or go through their website.

Hinata
This is a great option if you’re celebrating another quarantine birthday, or feel like splurging on sushi that isn’t from Whole Foods. Hinata has an omakase set that comes with 12 pieces of nigiri, miso soup, and dessert for $75. Your other choices include a five-piece toro tasting ($35), and a chirashi bowl with 14 pieces of sashimi ($46). Text 415-290-9623, call 415-829-8291, or go to their site to order for curbside pick-up. Heads up - they ask that you give two hours notice for pick-up orders.

OMAKASE
The aptly named restaurant in SoMa is unsurprisingly offering two different omakase set-ups: a nigiri set (11 pieces and six maki rolls for $58) and an 18-piece assorted sashimi ($80). They also have an assorted chirashi bowl, toro and uni a la carte, and sake, champagne, and wine. Order online for pick-up. They’re open every day except Monday.
