No matter how good of a cook you’ve become over the past year, eating brunch at home just doesn’t feel the same as it does on a sun-lit restaurant patio. Luckily, plenty of reopened restaurants have outdoor seating. From lemon ricotta pancakes on a sidewalk patio in Potrero Hill to excellent dim sum on a parklet in the Richmond, here are 28 great spots for brunch outside.

Foreign Cinema is one of our favorite places in San Francisco to kick back with a glass of wine and oysters - and enjoy one of the best brunches in the city. They’re accepting reservations for weekend brunch (Saturday and Sunday, 11am-3pm), and they also recently started serving full brunches on the sidewalk patio at the neighboring bar Laszlo.
The French bistro in Cole Valley is a brunch staple thanks to their absurdly good french toast, “miracle” pancakes, and range of benedicts and scrambles. Brunch is served on their heated back patio and parklet Monday through Friday, 8am-2pm and weekends from 9am-3pm. They’re not taking reservations, but you can sign up to get on the waitlist on the morning your brunch cravings kick in.
You can once again have Plow’s excellent lemon ricotta pancakes on their sidewalk patio. The neighborhood brunch spot in Potrero Hill is open daily (8am-2pm), and continues to seat diners on a first come, first serve basis. Takeout is also still available, so if you want to eat french toast with strawberries and mascarpone in bed, you can.
Do yourself a favor and get the brunch burger at Causwells. If that’s a little too much for 10am, the rest of the menu isn’t super-long but has everything you need: cocktails, eggs, salads, and a buttermilk biscuit that is a necessity. The Marina restaurant is taking reservations for outdoor and indoor dining online.
The home of the brown sugar, pepper, and cayenne-dusted “millionaire’s bacon” is also serving brunch on their patio on weekdays (10am-2pm) and weekends (9am-2:30pm). You can order the bacon, of course, as well as french toast, omelettes, and eggs benedict, and wash it all down with coffee, wine, and cocktails (bottomless mimosas are $22 a person with a 60-minute limit). Reservations are available online for weekend brunch only.
We really like this Ghirardelli Square dim sum spot from the people behind Dragon Beaux. And, like Dragon Beaux, Palette Tea House also serves the colorful xiao long bao with five different flavors, including a tasty crab roe with a turmeric wrapper. Ordering the har gow, which comes with small pipettes of lobster butter, is also never a bad idea. You can make reservations for their spacious outdoor patio online. They’re open Mondays through Fridays starting at 11:30am, and on weekends starting at 11am.
Chicken fried steak, chicken and waffles, hushpuppies, and tons of other Southern goodness make The Front Porch one of our go-to spots. The Bernal Heights restaurant also has patio and parklet seating on weekends complete with beignets, chicken and waffles, pulled pork chilaquiles, and a country breakfast with biscuits and eggs. Reservations aren’t required but if you want to secure a spot, head here.
Sweet Maple recently reopened their sidewalk patio and is once again serving all the brunch favorites - eggs scrambles, omelets, and french toasts which you can pair with freshly-squeezed orange juice, mimosas, or Bloody Marys. No reservations are required.
Auntie April’s is a Bayview institution and where you should go anytime you want a plate of incredible chicken and waffles. Each order comes with two pieces (tenders, leg, thigh, or breast) and your choice of the original, cinnamon, or red velvet waffle, and you can enjoy it all on their parklet out front. They’re open Thursdays to Sundays starting at 11am.
Soft scrambled eggs and excellent sandwiches bring us back here again and again. Universal Cafe also makes excellent banana bread, which you should absolutely order the moment you sit down. They’re not taking reservations for brunch (Saturday and Sunday, 9:30am-3pm), but call them at 415-821-4608 to get added to the waitlist. Limited indoor seating is also available.
Piccino is the kind of spot that you want to stay at all day, and is one of the best places in the Dogpatch for any meal. They make excellent coffee and pastries, plus very good pizza. Other brunch options here include savory bread pudding, frittas, house-made focaccia, and plenty of wine, beer, and brunch cocktails. Piccino is open for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, 11am-2pm. Lucho’s serves classic breakfast and lunch dishes infused with flavors from the Yucatan, like slow-roasted cochinita pibil sandwiches. For brunch, expect to see things like buñuelos, french toast, omelettes, egg plates, and a cochinita pibil plate served with black beans, rice, and corn tortillas. They’re open for outdoor dining daily from 9am-2pm.
Tartine Manufactory has all the pastries you could want, but they also have egg sandwiches and salads that are stellar. They’re serving a small, all-day menu on their large covered parklet (8am-4pm daily), which includes tartines, a quiche of the day, sunny-side eggs, coffee, and more. They also serve pizzas and calzones after 11am. Reservations are available online.
Salads and tacos for the lunch crowd, chilaquiles and polenta-platano pancakes for the breakfast people, and chipotle Bloody Marys for all. Padrecito is one of our favorites for brunch or dinner, and in pre-pandemic times, the atmosphere was always high-energy. They’re open daily, but breakfast is served 11am-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays only.
You come here for beignets and hangtown fries at this neighborhood spot serving lots of New Orleans-inspired food. They also make omelets that come with cornbread or grits, and you should take full advantage of this. The restaurant has sidewalk and covered parklet seating for breakfast and brunch Mondays through Fridays starting at 7:30am, and on weekends starting at 8am.
The breakfasty-lunchy spin-off of Brenda’s French Soul Food makes excellent beignets, huge biscuits, and pulled pork hash. We especially like the grits and eggs. Fridays through Sundays, Brenda’s also offers a weekend special eggs benedict with creole hollandaise. Breakfast/brunch is served daily from 8am-3pm out on their parklet (and in their newly reopened dining room). Make a reservation here.
Yank Sing is a San Francisco institution and for good reason: they make a lot of really great dim sum. But their phenomenal kurobuta pork and Napa cabbage-filled dumplings are what keep us coming back. You can order them, along with potstickers, BBQ pork buns, and any other items you see on the carts passing by your table, while dining outdoors at their Stevenson Street or Rincon Center locations. Yank Sing also recently reopened indoor dining at the Rincon Center atrium.
The Dorian is one of the go-to spots for brunch in the Marina - especially if you’re looking for a heated sidewalk patio and multiple orders of truffle fries. For brunch they’re serving everything from crabcake benedicts to avocado toasts to tri-tip hash, and they also have a solid brunch cocktail menu. Reservations are available online, but walk-ups are also welcome.
Mymy calls itself a coffee shop, but they’re much more than that - they have very good takes on brunch classics. The fact that the hash browns are the size of a small frisbee is also exciting. You might have to wait for a seat on their sidewalk patio (they don’t take reservations), but the benedicts are worth it.
Word. A Cafe
Word. A Cafe is situated on 3rd Street in Bayview and offers a small breakfast and lunch menu that includes excellent house-made buttermilk biscuits, a smoothie of the day, avocado toast, and dungeness crab melts. If you only order one thing, make it their Hot Latona, a breakfast sandwich made on a cheddar-jalapeño biscuit and stuffed with cheese and sausage and onion scramble. Everything is available to go or for dine-in on their covered parklet daily until 2pm (on Fridays, they stay open until 8pm).
At Flores, you’ll be able to have your morning margarita and order some eggs to go with it. The chilaquiles and vegetable scramble are good, and there are lunch-y things if you’ve already had your egg quota for the weekend. Brunch is Saturdays and Sundays, 11am-3pm. They’re not taking reservations in advance, but you can join the waitlist the day-of here.
You’ll want to order everything from this Richmond District spot as they serve some of the best dim sum in the city. Dragon Beaux’s extensive menu features everything from an impressive egg yolk lava bao to a jumbo scallop siu mai. And whenever we stop by (which is, basically, all the time), we always get the sea bass dumplings, and the “Five Guys” xiao long bao - they’re juicy, colorful, and taste as good as they look. If you need to be reminded that you live in a place surrounded by water, head to Mission Rock Resort, a two-story restaurant and bar in Mission Bay. During weekend brunch (10am-3pm), they serve seafood-focused dishes like oysters from the raw bar, dungeness crab benedicts, fish tacos, and poke, which you can get alongside a mimosa with orange, guava, pineapple, and many other juices. Reservations are available through their website.
Bernal Star is the go-to brunch spot for beignets, eggs benedict, and crispy fish sandwiches. The big draw though is their fantastic outdoor patio, which has umbrellas and plenty of heat lamps to keep you and your dog warm on chilly Bernal Heights mornings. They’re open for brunch daily starting at 11am on weekdays and at 10am Saturdays and Sundays.
One brunch spot that should be on your radar - B Star Bar, the sister restaurant of Burma Superstar. They deliver a pretty good brunch with tons of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, including tocino with fried sunny side up egg bowls and rich porridges. Make a reservation here for brunch on their parklet - the brunch menu is served Friday to Sunday, 11am-3pm.
Do you like Bloody Marys? Then Balboa Cafe and their covered parklet await. The eggs benedict, french toast, and huevos rancheros will keep you happy and the bloodies will keep you the happiest. They’re open daily for outdoor and indoor dining daily.
The Mission Bay restaurant overlooks the water and Oracle Park. The casual spot has plenty of patio space, including a rooftop deck. They serve chicken sandwiches, salads, flatbread pizza, and cocktails daily, and breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, and a bacon omelette during weekend brunch (10am-2pm). You can make reservations here.
Plenty of sidewalk and parklet seating and delicious breakfast pizzas are the top draws of Rose’s. You’ll probably have to wait for a table (reservations are only for dinner), so head across the street to Wrecking Ball to deal with your caffeine needs. The brunch menu is served from 9am-4pm on weekends, but they also have a weekday morning menu which is pretty similar.
