We have never seen more pop-ups in Miami, which makes sense. The temporary nature of the pop-up lends itself to our current dining reality, which is a melting iceberg of new rules and regulations that changes with little to no notice. But all these pop-ups have been an unexpected silver lining. And whether it’s a takeout operation or a restaurant trying something new, you should check out these places before they’re gone. Because we really have no clue how long they’ll be sticking around.

HaoChi is a dumpling pop-up taking over Calle Ocho’s Union Beer Store Mondays and Tuesdays from 4-9pm. The dumplings are excellent, and options include mushroom and leek, shrimp, cabbage and white miso, or pork, beef, and peanut gyoza. There are also charred snow peas and crispy chicken wings. You might as well get those on the table too. Union Beer also just opened some patio seating in their backyard. It looks and feels like a proper Little Havana backyard, rooster inlcuded.
Taquiza South Beach is hosting a new pop-up called Naan on the weekends. As you may have guessed, they’ll be serving Indian food, with a menu that includes samosas, kofta, chicken tikka, tandoori shrimp, and more. See the full menu online. Though, you probably don’t even need to look at the menu to know you want to order the naan sampler, which comes with flavors like garlic, Sichuan peppercorn, and an “everything” with kalonji, sesame, onion flakes, and ghee. The hours are Fri-Sun from noon-10pm, and they're open for takeout, delivery, and dine-in (with some outdoor seating too).
Some of the best barbecue in South Florida right now is being served from a North Miami front yard. Drinking Pig BBQ, which is open Fri-Sun, has a massive smoker full of things you definitely want to eat. There are classic pork ribs, tender brisket, pulled pork, beautiful spice-rubbed chicken that looks like it just got out of the tanning salon, and a beef rib that might strain your bicep. There’s also cornbread, mac and cheese, and collard greens - all of which are outstanding. They accept orders via Instagram DM Sun-Wed for the following weekend, which you should place as fast as your fingers will allow. You can take the food to-go or sit down and eat it on a shaded picnic table.
The Pide Place
The Pide Place is a pop-up currently operating out of Stanzione 87 in Brickell. They make some very tasty looking pide, which is a kind of oblong Turkish flatbread, along with other Middle Eastern dishes like cheese kunefe, hummus, and baklava. Right now, they’re open Friday and Saturday, and accepting orders online.
El Primo Red Tacos
El Primo is a taco pop-up in downtown specializing in beef birria tacos that come with a consomé dipping broth. There are other dishes here too, like birria quesadillas, a birria tostada, and even birria ramen. The pop-up is open Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday - operating out of the Mexican restaurant PEZ. Order online.
Margot Natural Wine
The team behind Overtown’s Copper Door B&B have pivoted to a takeout concept called Rosie’s, which has a small but absolutely fantastic menu. They’re open for breakfast and lunch on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. They serve a few different versions of fried chicken (all great), as well as crispy fried fish and grits, a breakfast sausage sandwich, biscuits, and a chocolate guava croissant. Jaguar Sun’s weekend pop-up dinners have consistently been one of the best quarantine dining experiences in Miami. They’ve recently switched their menu to an old school steakhouse concept, serving shrimp cocktail, caesar salad, martinis, and big hunks of beef. This is a dinner that can, briefly, make you forget that we’re currently living in a Black Mirror episode that was rejected for being “too sad.”
Zitz Sum is a pop-up from the chef behind No Name Chinese. Though the South Miami restaurant has been closed for a while, Zitz Sum is making some very good Chinese dishes like spicy chicken dumplings, char siu bar, and shanxi noodles. You can pre-order online, though it’ll probably take at least a few days to get your order.
The Downtown seafood spot Mignonette has turned into Red Sauce for the time being. The food at this takeout-only operation is Italian and it’s as good as you’d expect from the people that also run the outstanding Blue Collar. The menu is big for a pop-up and has appetizers like french bread pizza and saffron arancini with fig jam - both of which you should absolutely order. You can’t really go wrong with any of the red sauce entrees, but if you’re very hungry, get the eggplant parm. It comes with a very fun amount of cheese. Place your order online.
Few things in Miami - food or otherwise - have made people as excited as Old Greg’s over the last six months. And, after trying some ourselves, we get it. This is very good pizza. And while it also tends to sell out at warp speed, you’ll be able to order some eventually if you stay ready for their new order drops, which usually happen Wednesday at 1pm. The wings, garlic knots, and frozen mezcal cocktails are also worth getting.
Zak the Baker has some brand new outdoor seating and to celebrate they’re doing a falafel pop-up, Sun-Thu from 5-9pm. It’s a casual set up - you order at the window (or online), wait for your food, and then seat yourself. Falafel, fries, babka custard, and beer are all on the menu. And we’ll just let you take a moment to let the words “babka custard” sink in.
