You can load up on sushi at Murakami, but let’s not kid ourselves, you’re here for the sashimi bowls. Like Sugarfish, Murakami is a pretty fun place to be, and, unlike Sugarfish, you can have a perfectly filling (but not need-a-nap-afterwards filling) lunch for less than $20. Go for the number six (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, albacore, shrimp, eel, and avocado) or the slightly less loaded mixed bowl. And while you’re there, wave to everyone you’ve ever met.
Sushi is always a great option for date night, but getting stuck in a 90-minute omakase with a guy who just mentioned he’s going to the Warped Tour this summer is not. Head to Murakami, the insanely mellow sushi joint on Melrose that will get you in and out in 45 minutes every time. The regular sushi and sashimi is certainly passable here, but the move is to always go for their sushi bowls. The $15 Spicy Trio (spicy tuna, yellowtail, and salmon) is one of the best deals in the area.
When it comes to affordable, quality sushi bowls, Murakami is still our favorite spot in town. The tiny restaurant on Melrose has a full menu of solid offerings, but it’s their giant bowls (ranging from $17-$25) that keep us coming back. Our favorites include the mixed, a straight-forward order of tuna, salmon, albacore, yellowtail, and shrimp, as well as the spicy trio — a fiery bowl of chopped tuna, yellowtail, and salmon bathed in a slightly-spicy mayo, which makes for a perfect meal for a WFH lunch, solo dinner, or even leftover breakfast, straight from the fridge.
Murakami has a fairly extensive menu, but it all boils down to two words: sushi bowls. For $14-$20, you can mix and match any number of proteins and toppings to get your creation exactly to your liking. If it all sounds a bit too Yogurtland for you, fear not. Murakami’s sit-down service works for everything from a quick, solo lunch to a casual first-date spot.
