Where we've featured it
If you’re looking to up your daily step count with the promise of tempura rolls as reward, then make Takahashi your plan. The Japanese spot in South Wimbledon has a great service going on where you can call and collect, so your nigiri, maki, and sashimi can be ready and waiting. All are very good, but the one that stands out is the shrimp tempura maki. It has the perfect ratio of sticky rice to crispy battered shrimp.
You could walk past this tiny spot on Merton Road five times before realising that this low-key restaurant is home to some of the best sushi you can get in SW London. It’s a small restaurant with an intimate feel, and a menu of nigiri, sashimi, maki, and small plates. The fish is excellent, and the spicy tuna and shrimp tempura maki are some of the best we’ve had in London. They’re currently operating a takeaway system where you can order and pay via phone before collecting, making it the perfect place to order some nigiri and a few maki rolls for a big night in.
Shrimp tempura maki
“I’m a planner. And so when people say things about last-minute, unplanned, spontaneous things being the best, I think they’re lying. Until I had the equivalent in the form of food, with this meal from Takahashi. My dinner was already made, and sushi wasn’t part of the plan, but after staring at their Instagram for about an hour, I decided to head down and collect some maki rolls. They have a great takeaway service going on where you can call and collect so it couldn’t have been easier. I got four maki rolls: spicy tuna, salmon avocado, shrimp tempura, and crab and avocado. They were all very good, but the one that really stood out was the tempura. It had perfect sticky rice to shrimp ratio, and it’s not only one of the best things I ate this week, but one of the best tempura rolls I’ve had. Ever.”
