Sumiao Kitchen in Kendall Square is one of a handful of spots in Boston serving Hunan cuisine. After offering takeout and delivery for an extended period of time, they’ve now reopened for both indoor and outdoor dining. We stopped by to try a few things, which you can read about below.
If you’re wondering, we ordered everything at the highest spice level because we enjoy forcing our bodies to produce endorphins, but you can do as you please.
Food Rundown

Spicy Crunchy Cucumber: Don’t be fooled by the pool of red liquid that the cucumbers rest in - this pickled appetizer is sweet, crunchy, and surprisingly refreshing with only a hint of spice. It’s a perfect snack for those hot summer days.

Salt & Pepper Crispy Shrimp: Lightly-battered and perfectly deep-fried, these shrimp are served on a bed of stir-fried garlic, ginger, and an abundance of dried chili. Despite the chili, the shrimp’s actually not very spicy - just well-seasoned and delicious. Please order this.

Honey Beef La Rou: An interesting, texture-filled choice - the la rou has a similar consistency to beef jerky and pairs surprisingly well with the crunch of the dried chilis and toasted walnuts. Overall, a pretty sweet-tasting option.

Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs: Much sweeter than the la rou, and almost dessert-like on its own. But the spare ribs are very tender, and it does provide a nice counter to the other chili-filled dishes.
