If you’ve spent the last few weeks living off a diet of instant ramen and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, well, we’re with you. But it’s time to move on to bigger, better, and cheesier things. We’ve spent some time putting together a guide showcasing some of Austin’s best pizza that’s currently available for pickup and delivery for when you want something a little step above what your freezer has to offer.
40 North pulls of an improbable hat trick by serving some of the best Neapolitan-style pizza in town, a really great cheeseburger, and salads you actually want to eat. There’s also beer, wine, and curbside pickup with online ordering.
The thick and crisp Detroit-style pizza from Via 313 couldn’t be more different than the pizza in your freezer. Conveniently, all five locations of Via 313 have online ordering and contactless pickup. The restaurant locations have beer to-go, and more importantly, bottles of wine for $20.
Bufalina on Cesar Chavez and Bufalina Due on Burnet Road are open for takeout. You can pre-order online from their menu that includes appetizers, desserts, and wines by the bottle.
East Side Pies
All three locations of East Side Pies - Rosewood, Airport Blvd, and Highway 183 - remain open for takeout and delivery. If you’re looking for one of their daily individual slices, you’re out of luck for now. Or maybe it’s time to dream a little bigger and dedicate your next few meals to a whole pie.
If you’re fortunate enough to live close to Pieous Pizza, you’ll be happy to know that they’re currently offering their full menu for takeout online. In addition to Neapolitan pizza, they’ve got their full selection of pastries, salads, and some of the best pastrami we’ve come across.
The North Loop location of Home Slice is open for take-out. Call in, order online, or get delivery. If you often find yourself staring inside your fridge looking for a snack, the antipasto - a plate of Italian meats, cheeses, olives, and marinated artichoke hearts - makes for very good snacking.
The East Austin brewpub Oddwood Ales is selling their house-brewed beers (in four-packs and 32oz crowlers), wine, and their exceptional thin crust bar-style pizza. You can even get broccoli on your pizza so you can say you ate some vegetables. Order online.
Dough Boys is the new truck in Arbor Food Park in East Austin making wood-fired Neapolitan pizza. The pizza dough is hearty - unlike anything else in town. It’s made with a locally-sourced flour from Barton Springs Mill, and it’s fermented for 36 hours for a chewy, puffy, and tangy crust. The short menu of 12-inch pizzas includes the Green-Go, with garlic cream, smoked mozzarella, spicy pork sausage, a “secret” green sauce. We think about this pizza a lot.
If you haven’t tried Salvation’s signature New-Haven style pizza, we recommend starting with the white clam pie. In addition, there’s a wide variety of build-your-own pizza toppings, classic sandwiches, and calzones. Both their locations (in the Domain and on Rainey Street) have free delivery on all food, beer, and wine.
Phantasma - a cloud kitchen concept out of South Austin with exclusively takeout and delivery options - sets itself apart from the local pizza scene by focusing on thin crust Roman-style pizza, a style that we haven’t seen much of in Austin. The pies here - baked in a 900° oven with 72 hour-fermented dough - pair a crispy crust with a firm, but chewy base for the toppings that range from the classic margherita to one with potatoes and pancetta. And if you can handle a little heat, our favorite was the Incarnate - topped with San Marzano tomato, house-made mozzarella, capocollo, hot coppa, spicy sopressata, and peperoncino. Despite not having a physical storefront, they do have an adjoining patio if you’re worried about the pizza surviving the car ride home.
Just because you’re used to eating Hoboken Pie after a night of loud music at Stubb’s, doesn’t mean you can’t still get the same experience at home. Grab one of their New Jersey-style pizzas for takeout or delivery, tell Alexa to “turn it up to 11,” and bring the party home. If you’ve got kids, they’re giving away a free coloring book and crayons with every order. And if you don’t have any kids, we won’t tell if you want the coloring book for yourself.
There are two locations of The Backspace, one downtown, and the other on West Anderson Lane, and both serve wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas, panini, salads, beer, and wine. The West Anderson location also serves pasta and cocktails.
Southside Flying Pizza
The full menu of hand-tossed pizzas, salads, calzones, and appetizers is available at all four locations of Southside Flying Pizza, in addition to beer and wine. They also make some really excellent garlic knots, but you probably didn’t need our recommendation to throw a few orders into your cart. If you happen to be near the Manchaca location, they’ve got the full bar available for takeout as well.
Paffuto Pizza somehow manages to fit a full-sized, wood-burning 900°+ brick oven into a small food trailer at the East Side Food Park on Cesar Chavez. The specialty here is Neapolitan pizza, with toppings ranging from pepperoni, mushroom, and pesto, to goat cheese and pear. All the pies come out around a standard 12” Neapolitan, though we found the crust was just a little bit thicker and firmer than the very soft-centered Neapolitan pies we’re used to. They even have a pizza topped with a pesto swirl, which tasted as fun (and as good) as it sounds.
Toss has a really great, dog-friendly patio, but if you're looking for something to pick up, you can certainly hang out on your own dog-friendly patio and recreate the experience with their New York-style pizzas at home. They're available for curbside pickup and delivery every day at their South 1st and Bee Cave locations.
The Meteor is still serving Roman-style pizza (you can order a half or a whole pizza), alongside an entire menu of salads, bowls, and pastries. There’s also coffee, beer, and 40% off wine. You can order online for pickup or free delivery.
All three of the Austin-area Pinthouse Pizzas are open with takeout and delivery. On the beer front, they’re selling crowlers, four-packs, pony kegs, and full-size kegs.
DeSano takes their pizza pretty seriously - by importing Italian flour, San Marzano tomatoes, and cheese - and the end result is some spectacular Neapolitan pizza cooked in wood-fired ovens. Both the North Shoal Creek and downtown locations are open, and you can order online or via different delivery services.
With Neapolitan pizzas starting at $10 and half-priced bottles of wine for takeout and delivery, your next virtual happy hour might just be a little bit more bearable. And if you want something other than pizza, they’ve recently added a selection of fresh and dried pastas as well as sauces to bring home. Besides, how often will you be able to say you ate fresh ricotta gnocchi from the comfort of your bed?
